ABOUT
Swedish musician born in Halmstad in 1964.
MK is one of 3 sisters in the vocal group Chattanooga, who participated in the European Song Contest 1982 with their song "Hallå hela pressen", which they wrote together with the music group Strix Q. The sisters started to sing together in 1977, busking the streets of Paris to make some money in their holiday.
In 1987 MK formed "Yeah Bop Station" together with sister and drummer Clara Kempff and guitar player Thomas Larsson. As lead singer and bass player, MK was the front woman of the group. She also joined the blues rock group Sky High for a few months 1988, playing guitar and percussion as well as singing backing vocals. Ever since then she has alternated between playing bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and percussion.
In the years 1990 - 97 she was a part of the group SMISK together with, among others, Nike Markelius. It led to many years of collaboration, and 3 recorded albums, as a bass player with Markelius. MK also played in the orchestra of Markelius’ theater performances "Fandango" 1992 and "The Moon in the Bag" 1995.
From 1993 she became a member of the cover band Good Clean Fun, as well as Stig Malms Septett (Fittstimmet) the 7-piece house band of Robert Aschberg's TV-show "Tonight". During the 90's and 00's, MK toured as a bass player and / or guitar player with several Swedish artists; Pugh Rogefeldt, Evert Ljusberg, Melodie MC, Erik Koskinen, Tempelman Bros and others.
In 1999 until 2005, MK worked with Bohuslän Big Band as a lead vocalist in their project "BBB plays Zappa", playing Frank Zappa's music arranged for Big Bands. They played several concerts in Sweden and Norway, and had a live CD recorded and released in 2000. Together with her sister Ackie Kempff, she formed the duo K2, playing old Swedish folk songs and ballads, as well as their own material.
In 2001, MK joined the all-female blues band Little Jenny & The Blue Beans and hooked up with Jenny Bohman, Lotta Partapuoli and Justina Lakin. The band frequently toured Sweden, England, France, Germany, Belgium, Serbia, Denmark, Finland and Norway including Svalbard. They shared festival stages with among others Chuck Berry, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sherman Robertson, Deitra Farr and Magic Slim. They made concert programs for BBC Radio 2 and SR P4. Little Jenny & the Blue Beans did a series of school concerts for elementary and high school to inspire and promote the blues. The band was active until 2009. In November 2010, Jenny Bohman passed away after a time's disease.
In 2009, the Kempff sisters reunited as Östersundsrevyn's house band at Storsjöteatern in Östersund.
In 2010, MK created a "Recycling Concert" in collaboration with the recycling company Lundstams and Estrad Norr (county culture center). Eight musicians played on bulky waste and performed a musical piece that followed a washing machine through function, accident and recycling to new life. "Recycling Concert" later became a concert series in elementary school and high school in Jämtland County. They still meet and beat now & then.
Since 2011, Mia Kempff often performs by herself, with her own songs played on acoustic guitar. In 2016 she formed a new blues band called "Mia Kempff Racing Team”.
In addition to her own artistic and musical career, MK has often worked as a producer and project leader in musical contexts. The years 1993 - 97 as a program producer at the Stockholm Water Festival, since 2001 with the national music competition Musik Direkt, and since 2011 in various creative school projects in Jämtland County where she now lives.
Together with her husband Jörgen she runs
"Musiklådan Jämtland", an online music store building and selling instruments for preschool and special education.
